Voltaren belongs to a class of drugs, known as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and it is used for the treatment of pain or inflammation, which is caused by arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis. Its function is to reduce the hormones that cause inflammation in the body. Voltaren can also be used for other purposes which are listed above.The medication can increase the risk of heart problems or circulation problems, like heart attack or stroke. If you have done recently heart bypass surgery then you should avoid taking the medication. It can also increase risk of serious side effects on the stomach or intestines, like bleeding or perforation. You should avoid the medication if you have allergic reactions to Voltaren. Inform your doctor in advance if you have history of heart attack, stroke, blood clot, heart disease, congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, history of stomach ulcers or bleeding, asthma, polyps in your nose, bleeding or blood clotting disorder, liver or kidney disease, or if you smoke. In these conditions, you cannot take the medication or you need special dosage or you have to carry out specials tests during treatment.
The medication belongs to FDA pregnancy category C which means the medication is harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to be pregnant during the treatment. If you take the medication during the last three months of pregnancy, then it can create birth defects, so you need to avoid the medication during pregnancy. The medication can pass into milk of nursing mother and may be harmful to nursing baby, so if you are breast-feeding a baby then tell your doctor before taking the medication.
Take the medication as prescribed to you by your doctor and avoid taking the medication in larger amount, and never take it for longer than recommended period, prescribed by your doctor. You should follow the instructions on the label. If it is hard to understand then take help from your pharmacist. You should not crush or break an extended-release of tablet, but swallow it whole, because it is specially formulated to release the medication slowly in the stomach. If you break the medication then it will release the medication at one time. If you are using the medication for long time then you should visit you doctor in order to monitor the progress and side effects of the medication. Place the medication at room temperature and away from heat and moisture.
If you experience any signs of the allergic reactions like hives, difficulty in breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, then you need to get emergency medical help from your doctor immediately. The other serious side effects include black, bloody or tarry stools, chest pain, slurred speech, shortness of breath, weakness, problems with vision or balance, coughing up blood or vomit, urinating less than usual, nausea, low fever, stomach pain, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice, swelling or rapid weight gain, fever, sore throat, and headache with severe blistering, peeling and red skin rash, bruising, severe tingling, numbness, pain, and muscle weakness. If you experience any of the above side effects, then you need to stop the medication and get emergency medical help from your doctor.
