Toprol

Toprol belongs to a class of medicines called beta-blockers. It is used to affect the heart and flow of blood through arteries and veins. It is used in the treatment of angina and hypertension and it is also helpful to prevent heart attack. Doctors may also prescribe the medication for some other purposes that are not listed above.

In certain medical conditions, you are not able to take the medication or you have to carry out special tests or doctor will prescribe you special dosage adjustment. If you have such conditions, then tell your doctor. These medical conditions include asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, diabetes, heart problems like heart block, sick sinus syndrome, slow heart rate, or congestive heart failure, depression, myasthenia gravis, thyroid disorder, liver or kidney disease, pheochromocytoma, and problems with circulation like Raynaud's syndrome. The medication belongs to FDA pregnancy category C which is considered harmful to unborn baby. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to be pregnant. The medication appears in the milk of nursing mother so don’t try to use the medication without the consent of your doctor.



Take the medication as directed to you by your doctor and take each dose with a glass of water. Keep using the medication at the same time on the daily basis. If your doctor tells you to divide the tablet of Toprol into two parts and take half in one dose, then follow the instructions of your doctor. Don’t try to stop the medication without the consent of your doctor because it may aggravate your condition. If you need any type surgery then tell your doctor that you are using Toprol. You have to follow a complete program of the treatment with Toprol prescribed for hypertension like diet, exercise and weight control. Place the medication at room temperature and away from heat and moisture. If you miss a dose then take it as you remember and if there are four hours to take next scheduled dose then skip the missed dose and go back to your regular scheduled doses. If you suspect overdose then contact with your doctor. The symptoms of overdose include irregular heartbeats, shortness of breath, bluish colored fingernails, dizziness, weakness, fainting, and seizures.

If you feel one of the following symptoms of allergic reactions like hives, swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty in breathing, then contact with your doctor and get emergency medical help. You can also experience other serious side effects like irregular heartbeats, fainting, feeling light-headed, swelling of your ankles or feet, nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice, depression, cold feeling in your hands and feet. The less serious side effects include sleeping problems, tired feeling, anxiety, nervousness, decreased sex drive, and impotence.

Toprol-XL is used to treat high blood pressure, angina pectoris and heart attack. It is very effective if used alone or with combination of other medicines to decrease the force and rate of heart contractions. Sometimes doctors prescribe the medication to treat aggressive behavior, for the prevention of migraine headache and relief of temporary anxiety.
