Tofranil
Tofranil
Tofranil is used in the treatment of depression. The medication belongs to a class of drugs called tricyclic antidepressants. You can use the medication with other behavioral therapies to treat bed-wetting in children of six year ages and older, and this treatment can be carried out on short-term basis. The medication is also prescribed for the treatment of bulimia, attention deficit disorder in children, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and panic disorder. Tofranil-PM is used once a day on daily basis to treat major depression.You can take tofranil with or without food and during treatment with tofranil, you should avoid alcohol. You will feel the effect of the medication after one to three weeks. Sometimes, tofranil can make your mouth very dried and this problem can be eradicated with sucking candy or chewing gum. If you take the dose once a day before sleeping and you miss the dose then contact with your doctor. Don’t try to take the dose at morning time because you can get serious consequences. If you miss a dose then you should take the missed dose as soon as you remember and if the time is near to take the next scheduled dose then skip the missed dose and go back to your regular scheduled doses. Place the medication at room temperature, in a tightly closed container.
The side effects of tofranil cannot be anticipated, but if you feel any symptoms and they become intensified then tell your doctor immediately and the doctor will tell whether it is safe for you to continue taking the medication or not. The common side effects include breast development in males, confusion, breast enlargement in females, breast milk production, diarrhea, dry mouth, hallucination, hives, high blood pressure, low blood pressure upon standing, nausea, numbness, tremors, and vomiting. The side effects in children which are being treated for bedwetting are sleep disorders, stomach and intestinal problems, tiredness, and nervousness. There are other side effects which are reported in children. These include anxiety, collapse, convulsions, emotional instability, fainting, and collapse.
Those people who have recently recovered from heart attack should avoid taking the medication. If someone is taking MAO inhibitors like antidepressants nardil and parnate then he should avoid taking tofranil. You should also avoid the medication if you are allergic to tofranil. If a person is being treated with tofranil then his caregiver should notice any changes in the behavior of the patient. If they appear, then he should immediately tell the doctor. It may include agitation, anxiety, panic, extreme hyperactivity, and suicidal thinking etc. You should avoid the activities which need alertness like driving and operating of machinery. You may become sensitive to sunlight if you are taking tofranil so when you are out in the sun then be careful and try to avoid sunlight. If you are getting emergency surgery then you should avoid taking the medication. There are certain drugs which can interact with tofranil. You should tell your doctor if you are taking any other drugs.
