Tagamet

Tagamet is used to treat certain kinds of stomach and intestinal ulcers. It is used to treat upper intestinal ulcers, active benign stomach ulcers, erosive gastroesophageal reflux disease, prevention of upper abdominal bleeding and excessive acid conditions like zollinger-ellison syndrome. It is also helpful for the maintenance therapy of duodenal ulcer and the medication is also called histamine blocker. The medication is used to reduce the amount of acid produced by stomach and it is used to treat acne and avoid the condition of stress-induced ulcers. It is suitable in the treatment of chronic hives, herpesvirus infections, abnormal hair growth in women and over-activity of the parathyroid gland. It can also be used for some other conditions which are not listed above.

Those people who are taking tagamet are more susceptible to virus that causes pneumonia. In the presence of some medical conditions, the pneumonia develops easily so you should tell your doctor if you have the conditions like diabetes, a weak immune system, asthma or a chronic lung disorder, bone marrow suppression, kidney disease, or liver disease. The medication belongs to FDA pregnancy category B which means it is not harmful to an unborn baby but you should inform your doctor before taking the medication. Tagamet passes into milk of nursing mother and may be harmful to nursing infant, so if you are breast-feeding a baby then tell your doctor. The medication is not effective for children younger than 16 years.



Take the medication according to the advice of your doctor and avoid taking the medication in larger amount. The medication should be taken at night time with meal. Take each dose with water and try to drink more water in order to lessen the stomach upset. For taking the correct amount of dose, get a measuring spoon and take the medication on regular basis. If you have stomach ulcer then it will take longer time to be healed. Place the medication at room temperature and away from heat, moisture and direct light.

If you miss a dose then take it as soon as you remember and if the time is near to take the next scheduled dose then skip the missed dose and follow your regular schedule doses. Don’t try to take extra medicine. If you experience overdose then get emergency medical help. The symptoms of overdose include nausea, vomiting, confusion, extreme weakness, diarrhea, or fainting. You should avoid antacids if you are taking tagamet and your doctor may advice you what type of antacid you should take if it is essential for you.

If you experience the side effects then get emergency help like hives, difficulty in breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. You can also experience the serious side effects like cough, fever, chest congestion, trouble breathing, urinating less that usual, feeling faint, light-headed, disoriented, or confused, jaundice, rash, irregular heartbeat, easy bruising or bleeding, or unusual weakness. In such case, you should contact with your doctor. You can also experience other side effects than those listed above.
