Levothyroxine is a natural hormone, which is produced by thyroid and it is considered very important for normal energy and metabolism. But in some situations, the body is unable to produce this hormone enough for the function of our body, therefore Synthroid is used to treat this condition and take place of natural thyroid hormone. It is also used to prevent and treat goiter. Synthroid is also used for some other purposes than those listed above.Synthroid is used in case if your thyroid is not producing enough hormones, but if you have other hormone related problems then you should avoid taking the medication. There are certain conditions in which you should consult with your doctor before starting the medication. These medical conditions include heart disease like coronary artery disease, hypertension, or angina. In the treatment with Synthroid, you can observe some changes like changes in sugar level, and so special monitoring is necessary during the treatment. The medication comes in FDA category A, which is safe for those who are pregnant and it is also safe for nursing mothers. The drugs passes into milk of nursing mother but it cannot harm the nursing infant.
Take the medication as prescribed to you by your doctor and take each dose with full glass of water. For better effects, the medication should be taken at the same time everyday and it is taken at morning to avoid insomnia at night. You should not stop the medication without consultation of your doctor. It will take about several weeks to offer better feeling. Place the medication at room temperature and away from heat and moisture.
If you miss a dose then take it as soon as you get remembered and if it is almost the time to take next scheduled dose, then skip the missed dose and follow your regular scheduled doses. Don’t try to take overdose of the medication. If you experience overdose then you need to get medical attention. The symptoms of overdose include chest pain, tremor, rapid heartbeat, irregular menses, abdominal pain, diarrhea, increased appetite, fever, trouble sleeping, headache, nervousness, and decreased weight.
If you experience the following side effects then you should stop the medication and get medical help. These severe side effects include difficulty in breathing, closing of the throat, swelling of your lips, tongue, or face, vomiting, chest pain, irregular heartbeat, and shortness of breath. You can also experience less severe side effects like headache, diarrhea, leg cramps, fever, sweating, menstrual irregularities, insomnia, tremor, nervousness, changes in appetite or weight loss, but you should continue your medication.
Synthroid can interact with other drugs and decrease the effect of Synthroid. These medicines include antacids that contain aluminum, the cholesterol-lowering drugs, ulcer medicines like sucralfate, and you should tell your doctor before taking the medication. These drugs may bind to Synthroid and make it less effective by reducing the amount that is available in the body.
