Silvadene
Silvadene
Silvadene is used to treat bacterial or fungus infections. It is applied on the affected area and burned area in order to prevent bacterial or fungus infections that occur in burns. Silvadene is applied with other medications to treat wound infections in people with 2nd and 3rd degree burns and the medicine is very effective against a variety of bacteria.If you want to use the medication and if you are allergic to Silvadene or any of the following medicines like acetazolamide, antidiabetics, and dichlorphenamide, furosemide, methazolamide, sulfonamides, and thiazide diuretics, then tell your doctor. You should avoid the medication at the end of pregnancy, because it may lead to complications for your baby. Those women, who are breast-feeding a baby, should tell their doctor before using this medication, because it is not known whether it passes into milk of nursing mother or not. Your doctor may advise you to stop breast-feeding until your treatment is finished.
If you are using other drugs like cimetidine, collagenase, papain, and sutilains, then tell your doctor because these drugs can change the effect of Silvadene. If there is any medical problem especially blood problems, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, kidney disease, or liver disease, then tell your doctor because these can affect the use of Silvadene. This medication is not recommended for infants of two months, because it may cause liver problems in infants. Apply the medicine as directed to you by your doctor. First you should clean the affected area, remove any dirt or debris on the skin, and than apply this medication. You should have sterile glove which is used to apply the medicine, and then make a thin layer of Silvadene on the affected area of skin. Spread the medicine slowly on the affected area and then cover the affected area with some covering. Keep applying the medication until the affected area gets healed.
The dose for different patients will be different and it will depend on the condition of the patient. The recommended dosage for adults and children of two months of age is to use the medication one or two times a day, while for premature and newborn infants, your doctor will direct you how much you should apply. If you miss a dose then apply it as soon as you get remembered and if the time is near to apply the next dose then skip the missed dose and follow your regular schedule of doses. Keep this medicine and other medicines away from children. Store the medication away from heat and direct light and don’t let it to be freeze.
You cannot anticipate any serious side effects from the medication, but if there are any side effects developed then contact with your doctor immediately to determine whether it is safe for you or not. The common side effects include burning sensation, areas of dead skin, red and raised rash on the body, and skin discoloration. There are certain drugs which can interact with the Silvadene. If you use the medication with them, then effect of Silvadene can be increased, decreased or altered. These drugs include panafil and santyl which contain collagenase, papain, or sutilains.
