Risperdal

Risperdal is used to affect the chemical present in the brain. It is an antipsychotic medication and it is also used to treat schizophrenia and mania that are associated with bipolar disorder. Doctors may prescribe the medication for other purposes other than those that are listed above.

There are some medical conditions in which you are unable to take Risperdal or you require special monitoring during the treatment with Risperdal. The medical conditions include a history of heart attack, irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, any type of heart disease, epilepsy or other seizure disorder, diabetes, breast cancer, liver disease, and kidney disease. Hyperglycemia is a condition which is reported in some patients who are treated with Risperdal. The tablets contain phenylalanine and its ratio is different for different mg of tablets. The medication belongs to FDA pregnancy category C which is unknown whether it is harmful to unborn baby or not, but consult with your doctor before taking the medication, if you are pregnant or plan to be pregnant. It is not known whether it passes into milk of nursing mother, but it is better to inform your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.



Take the medication exactly as prescribed to you by your doctor and if you could not understand the instruction then ask it from your pharmacist. The injection form of Risperdal is only administered by a health professional. Take the tablets with one full glass of water on regular basis. You can take Risperdal orally-disintegrating tablets without water. You have to open the blister and put the tablet on the tongue and thus the tablet will disintegrate with no time and then will easily be swallowed without any liquid. Don’t try to chew or store the tablet for later use if it is opened. If you use the liquid form of Risperdal then mix with water or other juices, but don’t mix it with carbonated water. For better effects, take the tablets on daily basis and it may take several weeks to make you better and don’t stop to take the medication unless your doctor direct you. You doctor may ask for blood tests or other medical evaluations during the treatment with the medication in order to monitor progress and side effects of the medication.

If you miss a dose then take it as soon as you remember and if it is almost the time to next scheduled dose, then skip the missed dose and continue you regular schedule of doses. If you have taken overdose of the medication then you should get medical help. The symptoms of overdose include dizziness, drowsiness, fever, and sweating, uncontrollable movements of arms, hands, tongue, face or other parts of the body, increased heart rate, fainting, and muscles spasms.

If you experience the following side effects then contact with your doctor immediately. These include confusion, sweating, fever, severe muscle stiffness, and irregular heartbeat. There are some potentially fatal side effects called neuroleptic syndrome. You can also experience some serious side effects like difficulty in breathing, closing of throat, swelling of lips, tongue, or face, uncontrollable movements of the tongue, face, lips, arms, severe restlessness or tremor, severe drowsiness, or irregular heartbeat. In such cases you should stop the medication and tell your doctor.
