Questran
Questran
Questran is used to treat people who have high cholesterol levels in their blood or it is used to treat hypercholesterolemia which is a genetic condition which occurs due to lack of LDL receptors which functions to remove cholesterol from the bloodstream. It is used to treat the people who have hypertriglyceridemia. It is a condition in which too much fat is stored in the body. Doctor also prescribes the medication to relieve itching associated with gallbladder obstruction. The medication comes in two forms, Questran and Questran light and both can be used according to the same instructions.You should take the medication according to the prescription of your doctor. Questran should not be taken in its dry form. It is taken with water or other liquids. If you are taking Questran then you should use 2 to 6 ounces of water or other liquid per packet. For light Questran, use 2 to 3 ounces of water or other liquid. You can use soups or fruits with high moisture contents, like applesauce or crushed pineapple instead of beverages.
If you have missed a dose then take it as soon as you remember and if the time is near to take the next dose then skip the missed dose and go on you regular schedule of doses. Always try to keep the medication at room temperature and away from heat and moisture. Side effects of the medications cannot be anticipated. If they occur, then tell your doctor. Its common side effects include constipation. You should avoid taking the medication if you are sensitive or have a history of allergic reactions to Questran or other related drugs like colestid. Be sure that doctor must be aware of the drugs reactions that you have experienced.
If you have the problems of phenylketonuria, then tell your doctor before taking light Questran because the product contains phenylalanine. If you are getting treatment for a disease that contributes to increased blood cholesterol like hypothyroidism, diabetes, nepthrotic syndrome, dysproteinemia, or obstructive liver diseases, then you should inform your doctor before taking the medication. Questran only reduces the cholesterol level in the first month of therapy and if the desired result is not obtained then you should tell your doctor. He may add more cholesterol-lowering drugs.
The usage of the medication may create or aggravate the condition of constipation and hemorrhoids and if you feel such like symptoms then inform your doctor. The prolonged use of Questran may lead to the change in the level of acidity in the bloodstream, especially in younger and smaller individuals, so it is important to visit your doctor on regular basis.
There are certain drugs which can interact with Questran and the effect of the medication could be increased, decreased or altered. The drugs include digitalis, estrogens and progestins, oral diabetes drugs, penicillin G, Phenobarbital, propranolol, spironolactone, etc. It is possible that the doctor recommends you to use the drugs before or 4 to 6 hours after you take Questran.
