Potassium Chloride
Potassium chloride is used to treat a condition in which lack of natural potassium occur in our body. Potassium is a type of mineral that is naturally present in foods and it is important for many normal functions of our body, like the beating of the heart. If you need potassium chloride then before taking the medication, you should first tell your doctor about the conditions if you have, because if you have the following medical conditions, then you are not able to take the medication. These medical conditions include kidney disease, Addison’s disease, stomach ulcer or intestinal blockage, chronic diarrhea.It belongs to FDA pregnancy category C, which means the medication may be harmful to unborn baby so you should tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to be pregnant. It is not known that the medication can passes into the milk of nursing mother, but before starting the medication, you should consult with your doctor.
You should take the medication as prescribed to you by your doctor and don’t try to take greater amount of the medication. Swallow the medication with a full glass of water and you can also take it with food or milk to avoid any stomach upset. You should not crush or chew the capsule and swallow the capsule as a whole so that it can release the drug slowly in the stomach. For better results, you should take potassium chloride on daily basis and keep the medication at room temperature away from heat and moisture.
If you miss a dose then you take it as soon as possible if you get remembered, and if it is almost the time of next dose then skip the missed dose and follow you regular schedule of dose. You don’t try to take large amount of dose. If you do so, then you should go for a doctor. The symptoms of overdose include paralysis, numbness or tingly feeling, uneven heartbeat, feeling light-headed, fainting, chest pain or heavy feeling, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, seizure, sweating.
If you experience the following side effects then you should have medical help. The side effects are allergic reactions like hives, difficulty breathing, and swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat. If you feel the following side effects then you stop to take the medication. The side effects are chest pain, nausea, sweating, general ill feeling, irregular heartbeat, confusion, unusual tiredness, weakness, stomach pain or severe cramping, black, bloody stools. You can also experience some less severe side effects. You should continue your medication in such conditions like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, skin-rash, mild tingling in your hand or feet, or anxiety.
There are some drugs which can interact with potassium chloride so you should tell your doctor about the medication which you are using, which include ACE inhibitor like benazepril, captopril, fosinopril, enalapril, atenolol, betaxolol, pinlolol, propranolol, sotalol, diuretic like amiloride, bumetanide, indapamide, metolozone, torsemide, steroid like prednisone, NSAID, diclofenac, diflunisal, etodolac, flurbiprofen, indomethacin, ketoprofen, ketorolac, mefenamic acid, meloxicam, nabumetone, naproxen, and Piroxicam etc.
