For reliving the symptoms related with diabetic gastric stasis or gastric reflux and for prevention from nausea and vomiting, Metoclopramide is used. It strikes on vomiting center in brain and prevents nausea and vomiting. It also adds energy to the movement of the stomach and intestines. It comes in tablet and syrup forms. Both forms are taken before taking meal and bedtime. The time of taking it before the other one is 30 minutes. There are many reasons of this, but most important reason is to produce better results. Metoclopramide should be very carefully taken, and you should always follow the instructions labeled on the bottle of the syrup or consult the doctor for more assistance. The dose should not be taken double, in case of missing.There are many side effects of Metoclopramide. Among them, fatigue, Diarrhea, drowsiness, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, nausea, insomnia, weakness, and restlessness are significant. If the patient feels dizzy, then he should be asked to lie down for a while and to stand up slowly. The patient should also be advised to take care when he is on stairs. If the patient feels mouth dryness then he should be advised to chew sugarless gum. If it is not available then he may take ice chips or hard candy. If some new symptom comes that has not been listed above, ask to the doctor for medical assistance.
Metoclopramide does interfere with several types of medicines. It can cause extreme drowsiness if it is used with antihistamines, muscle relaxants, pain medications, tricyclic antidepressants, phenothiazine tranquilizers, benzodiazepine tranquilizers, alcohol, barbiturates, narcotics, and sleeping medications. There is a possibility of blocking the effectiveness of Metoclopramide, if it will be used Narcotic Analgesics. Metoclopramide itself blocks the effectiveness of pergolide and bromocriptine. From the gastrointestinal tract, it decreases the absorption of Cimetdine and Digoxin, and also decreases their effects. The body’s absorption of acetaminophen, tetracycline, alcohol and levodopa can be increased by Metoclopramide. For the patients of Diabetes, insulin may be changed during the treatment of Metoclopramide. It can also increase the blood pressure when it will be used with Monoamine Oxidase (MAO). If the patient is using any medicines then he should inform the doctor about them.
Before using Metoclopramide, inform the doctor about if the patient has any allergic reaction and the patient has any of these disorders, epilepsy, kidney, liver, intestinal bleeding or blockage. It is warned not to operate any machinery or car driving if the patient feels dizzy or drowsy. It is important because all these machines need attention to operate or to drive the car and patient does not care and he can suffer from a disaster. If the patient feels any uncontrolled movements of eyes, face, legs, arms or hands then he should go for medical aid. The studies of Metoclopramide have not conducted on pregnant women, but it has been proved that Metoclopramide passes through breasts so if there is need to use Metoclopramide then inform the doctor.
