Macrobid’s generic name is Nitrofurantoin (oral) (Nye troe fyoor AN toyn) with brand names Furadantin, Macrobid, and Macrodantin. As Nitrofurantoin has some serious side effects; like stroke of lungs, nerves, eyes, blood, and intestines. It is strongly recommended to contact a doctor if the patient feels chest pain, shortness of breath, yellowness of eyes or skin, stomach pain, unusual fatigue or weakness, tingling or numbness, eye pain or visual change, diarrhea, or other respiratory problems. It should be taken with milk or food to reduce the effects on stomach.Nitrofurantoin belongs to the family of antibiotic and it fights with bacteria in the body. It is used for treatments of unary tract infections, and may also be advised for some other aims. But one thing should be kept in mind that if the patient has kidney diseases, anemia, diabetes, any type of debilitating disease, vitamin B deficiency, and glucose 6phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency then it should not be advised to them. It can be taken during pregnancy, which is granted by the FDA. This falls into category B of FDA, which does not oblige stopping during pregnancy. It is not harmful to the unborn baby. But one thing to remember is that, if pregnant woman has reached in period of 38-42 weeks or during labor and delivery, then it is strongly recommended to take with the permission of the doctor. Infants of age less than one month are prohibited to use it.
The dose of Nitrofurantoin should be exactly advised by doctor. Nitrofurantoin should be stored under the room temperature and cool place. Water is used for taking a dose of it. But for reducing stomach disturbance, it should be taken with milk or food. There is not need to overdose if the patient misses one. If a dose gets missed then take the next dose as you take regularly. Magnesium should not be taken after and before taking Nitrofurantoin.
The side effects of Nitrofurantoin come in the forms of allergic reaction and this allergic reaction may cause difficultly in breathing, closing of patient’s throat, swelling of patient’s lips or tongue or face. Other side effects are chest pain, respiratory problems, stomach problems, yellowing of eyes or skin, usual weakness or fatigue, tingling, fever or chills, visual changes, and diarrhea. These are serious problems which may occur after taking Nitrofurantoin.
Other less serious side effects include rust colored or brownish urine, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, and nausea. Macrodantin comes in various forms. It comes in 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg strengths. In 25 mg, it comes in opaque white capsules with black strip. 50mg contain opaque yellow or white by way of two black strips. 100 mg capsule comes in three black strips. All medicines should keep away from children.
