Lopressor
Lopressor
The generic name of Lopressor is metoprolol tartrate. The metoprolol is available under the brand names of Lopressor and toprol XL. The purpose of the medicine is to treat high blood pressure, angina pectoris, chest pain and heart attack. It is also known as beta-blocker, because it reduces the force and rate of heart contractions. So it decreases the requirement of oxygen and lowers the blood pressure. In fact it improves the heart condition when heartbeat is fast and irregular. When Lopressor combines with other medicine of high blood pressure, it becomes more effective. Sometimes doctor prescribe Lopressor for aggressive behavior because it is effective for the treatment of intermittent explosive disorder. Lopressor is available in the form of capsules and extended release tablet too. The Lopressor capsules are available with different strength, such as 50 mg, 100 mg. Extended releases of the tablet with Toprol are XL50 mg, 100 mg and 200 mg. You need to take Lopressor once in a day and you can take tablet with meal or after finishing the meal. When you start taking Lopressor, it will work slowly and gradually on your high blood pressure and it take weeks to show improvement.Whenever you want to start medicine, you need to consult doctor. You might need some precautions before starting the Lopressor, because it can be possible that you are allergic to metoprolo. Even if you are suffering from heart problem such as heart block, slow heart rate and problem with circulation, then you can’t use Lopressor. On the other hand, if you are suffering from congestive heart failure, depression, asthma, diabetes, liver, kidney or thyroid disorder, you need to consul doctor. You need to inform your doctor if you are taking other medicines, such as vitamins, nutritional supplements and herbal. In this case, doctor can adjust your dose and keep you under observation. If you are pregnant or planning for a baby, you need to consult doctor before starting Lopressor. Even breastfeeding mothers should avoid taking Lopressor or discuss with the doctor, because Lopressor can mix with breast milk and it will affect your child’s growth.
The most common side effects of Lopressor are depression, rash, diarrhea, dizziness, vomiting, stomach pain, tiredness and itching. Besides these side effects, if you figure out any change, you need to contact your doctor. On the other hand, if you are facing some uncommon side effects such as shortness of breath, slow heartbeat, weight gaining, irregular heart beat and swelling on hands, fees, ankles or lower leg. In these conditions, you need to take medical help. If you are overdose of Lopressor by mistake or intentionally, then it will cause you some overdose symptoms. The overdose symptoms are dizziness, fainting, difficulty in breathing or swallowing. If you are facing any of these side effects, you need to contact doctor or call local poison control centre for help. If you stop taking your medicine, then it will harm you in the form of chest pain and heart attack. For avoiding this situation, you need to low your dose slow and gradually.
